Titled “The Independent Cultural Sector in Moldova (ICS)”, the study is a landmark effort to understand this segment of contemporary culture. It marks an important moment in the recognition of the sector by examining its defining characteristics, systemic challenges, and its potential to generate social and cultural transformation.
Authored by Lilia Nenescu and Vitalie Sprînceană, the study combines quantitative and qualitative methods: 31 interviews with artists and cultural workers, 50 questionnaires completed by active members of the ICS, along with a detailed analysis of the legislative framework and socio-economic realities. The findings highlight the sector’s importance in promoting solidarity, social cohesion, and pluralism, positioning itself against profit-driven logic and taking an active role in social transformation by integrating political and ethical dimensions into artistic practice.
Because it is the first study of its kind in the Republic of Moldova, it becomes an essential reference point for future cultural policies and for the genuine recognition of the work and contribution of those active in the independent cultural sector.
